Each hole on Sandy Hills is spectacular, with stunning views across the Old Tom Morris Links toward the beautiful Sheephaven Bay. Intended for the serious golfer, and designed with championship play in mind, its narrow fairways appear constricting from the tee, but the landing areas sculpted from the dunes are deceptively wide. Measuring an impressive 7,255 yards from the tips, this course may appear daunting, however the diversity of tees offer a length to suit all strengths.
Above all, the appeal of Sandy Hills lies in its beautifully balanced steering through the high dunes shrouded in marram grass, and the striking resemblance to the sandhills near the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland that form the spine of Royal Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock. Many of the holes feature elevated tees and greens, with drives into natural bowls on the dune floor.
The Rosapenna Golf Resort acquired the St Patrick’s Links in late 2012, a former 36-hole facility developed by the Walsh Family of Carrigart.
The original design of this links course is credited to (and named after) Old Tom Morris who, in 1891, was visiting Lord Leitrim at his nearby estate, and was quick to see the golfing potential of the fine stretch of coastline.
